Driver’s License

New residents must buy a Louisiana driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency in the state. Holders of valid out-of-state driver’s licenses are not required to take the driving test, but they must take the visual and other tests.

To obtain a Louisiana driver’s license you must bring your current driver’s license, two forms of identification and your Social Security card to the Office of Motor Vehicles.

Vehicle Registration

New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency in the state. To register your vehicles, bring proof of liability insurance, current registration and the titles for the vehicles. If you have paid sales tax on the vehicles, bring proof of payment. Vehicle Inspections

Inspection stickers must be renewed yearly at service stations designated by the orange “Louisiana Inspection Station” signs. However, your inspection sticker from the previous state is valid until it expires. You will need a valid Louisiana driver’s license, Louisiana registration certificate, and a Louisiana license plate. The driver also must provide proof of liability insurance, which must be kept in the vehicle at all times.

Vehicle Taxes

If you are considering buying a new car before you move here be aware that your new car or any car brought into the state will be taxed.
